Well atleast Dave Kingman hit a monster home run every now and then.
So let me get this straight. Ilya Kovalchuk wants to WIN so he's going to choose Long Island who haven't won before he was born instead of New Jersey.
Ilya Kovalchuk is your typical greedy Russian who just wants to get paid and has never won anything.
Mrs. Kovalchuk would rather listen to the screeches of Long-guy-land women than the upper crusty snobs of Beverly Hills.
That's profiling. Different tact.
Ilya Kovalchuk's agent is brilliant and will help to ruin hockey.
History repeats itself. Islanders don't learn from Yashin and DiPietro. They'll get what they deserve, they won't get a new arena because of the backwards politics in Nassau, Charles Wang will have had enough and sell to someone who will realize that the Islanders are losing a fortune and the new owners will blow up the team leaving Kovalchuk as the only good player remaining because nobody will take on that contract.
So Dean Lombardi can't get anyone to voluntarily play in Los Angeles unless they're at the tail end of their careers and have to be overpaid.
The frustrating part about all of this is... I agree with Lombardi.
You can't pay one player 10 million bucks. You just can't. You can't pay Hamhuis 27 million dollars including a 9 million dollar signing bonus. You just can't. You can't pay Paul Martin 5 million dollars, even though he was ready to do so. You just can't.
And as much as Kings fans are about to ask for a refund on their season ticket deposits, drink themselves into a 4th of July frenzy, and as much as the Kings probably WONT make the playoffs, and as much as the Kings will pick up yet another broken down player with a tendency to score when he is healthy... the Kings are doing the right thing by NOT signing Kovalchuk to a 10 year 100 million dollar contract.
It's just plain stupid.
Ilya Kovalchuk WILL help the Islanders, especially with Okposo and Baily and Tavares, but it doesn't make them Stanley Cup contenders. Not with Streit, Eaton, Martinek and Jurcina manning the blueline (come on Islanders fans, lets be realistic before you resort to calling me a douche).
Please, when you drink this holiday weekend, don't drive - life is too wonderful... besides, you want to be alive when your team wins the Stanley Cup.
